Delaware Trooper Laid To Rest

It was a solemn occasion this afternoon at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware where the Celebration of Life Service for the late Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard was held.  The ceremony itself was an emotionally charged one with several officers choking back tears as they addressed the guests and thousands of policemen who were present.

This is not the first time we are reporting on such an event. I have attended similar services for policemen killed in the line of duty on behalf of the station on several occasions but there was something different about this one. The first thing that stood out was the unusual number of policemen present for such events. I found out later in a conversation with some officials that there were policemen from 34 states at this funeral.

I know this may come as a surprise to some readers but there are more policemen killed on duty across the United States than most people are aware of. The average number of policemen killed in the line of duty over the last 10 years is 53. Last year, 2016, 63 servicemen were killed in the line of duty

The ceremony started at 11 a.m. and ended sometime around 2 p.m. The body of the African American policeman was gracefully sent off in a black hearse to his rest. According to reports, the young trooper was shot several times in front of a convenience store in the relatively quite town of Bear  by a driver he stopped. He left behind a wife and a daughter. Both  his mother and father were present for the funeral.
